Incidence
Sickle cell Anaemia is a worldwide disease, approximately 5% of the worldwide population carry the "sickle cell trait". The disease is most prevalent in people from:
- Sub-Saharan Africa
- South America (e.g. cuba)
- Middle East ( Saudi Arabia etc)
- Mediterranean (Greece, Italy etc)
People from African American backgrounds are also likely to inherit Sickle cell Anaemia:
- 72,000 people with African ancestors
- The disease occurs 1 in every 500 African-Americans.
- 1 in every 1000 to 1400 Hispanic-American born with Sickle cell Anaemia.
- Around 2 million Americans, or 1 in 12 African Americans, have the "sickle cell trait".
Some statistics of Sickle cell anaemia in the UK:
- 1 in every 300 people known to have sickle cell anaemia.
- 1 in 10 people are considered ‘at risk' of having the "sickle Cell Trait".
